Good Chop: Butcher Delivery Review (2021)
Good Chop is an online butcher service delivering American meat and seafood to your door
Disclaimer: I was not paid for this review, but I was given free product. All opinions are my own. I do have an affiliate code if you decide you’d like to try Good Chop and would like $100 off your first 3 boxes!
Overview:
Good Chop is advertised as a high quality meat and seafood delivery service. None of their products have added antibiotics or hormones, and all meat comes from US farms and ranches. Fish is caught off American coastlines or raised in US fisheries.
Meats are a great source of nutrients and protein. Iron, zinc, and B vitamins are all found in meats, and wild salmon is a great source of vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids.
Research points to about 0.73 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight for anyone doing resistance training. For a 150 lb person, that would be about 110 grams of protein per day. Meat and seafood provide good ways to get this protein, and where those proteins are sourced and how they are raised has been a source of conversation recently.
Good Chop is a butcher delivery service that does the research of sourcing for you - working with USA family farmers, independent ranchers and US fisheries off American coastlines.
Price Breakdown:
I got the medium box, which is $150. Shipping is included which is nice as most boxes charge extra for that.
This amounted to $15.80 per pound on average. I did a comparison with prices from my local grocery, which amounted to $11.50 for similar items that were not necessarily domestic or raised without hormones/antibiotics.
Is an extra $4 per pound worth the convenience of delivery and higher quality product? It really depends on what you value and what disposable income you have.
Ordering Process
All boxes are fully customizable. You pick what meats you will get, and boxes ship once a month
Boxes come in medium (36 servings, $150) and large (72 servings, $269)
Select from 16 cuts of beef, 7 types of pork including bacon, chicken breast and thigh, and salmon, rockfish and cod.
Ordering was quick, taking me only a few minutes once I had created my account.
Canceling your account or skipping weeks is in the interface, no need to email to cancel like some services.
Packaging
Meat came in a box with dry ice. My package was delayed by a day (I received an email from Good Chop about this so I was warned) but my meat was still fully frozen.
Shipping delays happen, and I was happy with how it was handled. If my meat had not been in good condition, they would have given me a new box.
Final Thoughts
There are many debates on meat and the quality that we get, especially in the United States. Standards are not as high as they could be, and transparency on what we are receiving isn’t there.
High quality vegetarian raised meat without hormones, antibiotics, or preservatives is more expensive, especially when raised domestically. This may or may not be worth the added cost depending on your situation. But if you decide that it is worth it, Good Chop is a service I would recommend.
